Oct. 4, 2004
LOS ANGELES -- The USC men's tennis team begins fall competition this week at the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Champions Club in Chatanooga, Tenn. The two-week event, which includes pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draw rounds, is the largest single tournament in collegiate tennis and features the nation's top collegiate players.
With over 350 competitors this the first of three national championship events during the 2004-05 season at the NCAA Division I level. The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and is followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
Seniors Johan Berg and Drew Hoskins, as well as sophomore Jamil Al-Agba will represent the Trojans at this year's event. Hoskins enters the tournament in the qualifying round to be played Oct. 4-6, while Berg and Al-Agba begin play in the main draw, Oct. 7-10.
Berg is the only returning player to the tournament. In 2003 he received a 'lucky loser' spot in the main draw of the championship and advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to eventual finalist (and 2004 NCAA Singles Champion) Benedickt Dorsch of Baylor.
