Sumantri And Hadzic Win Doubles Debut
Oct. 5, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Washington's top two returning women's tennis players Dea Sumantri and Dinka Hadzic teamed up in doubles for the first time today and picked up a win in the first round of qualifying at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships this afternoon. With the win, the pair needs two more victories to advance into the tournament's main draw, held Oct. 7-10.
Hadzic and Sumantri, ranked 14th in the ITA preseason rankings, faced the No. 40 team of Indra Erichsen and Dita Hauerlandova from San Dieogo State. The match was taken to a tiebreak where the Huskies won, 8-6, for the final 9-8 (6) margin. In the second round Hadzic and Sumantri are slated to face Florida's 36th-ranked team of Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak.
The All-American Championships are the first of three national championships of the collegiate tennis season and own the largest field of the three. That Hadzic and Sumantri must go through qualifying to reach the main draw is no detriment, 23 of the top 50 doubles teams in the preseason rankings are hoping to qualify for a mere four main draw spots.
