Palmanshofer's Run Ends At All-American Championships
Oct. 6, 2004
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Senior Christoph Palmanshofer was ousted today in the third round of qualifying at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships, falling one win short of advancing into the tournament's main draw.
The 88th-ranked Palmanshofer was defeated in straight sets by 120th-ranked Luke Shields of Boise State, 6-4, 6-2. Shields earned one of the qualifying bracket's 16 spots into the main singles draw with the win. The qualifying draw featured 34 of the top 100 singles players in the preseason ITA rankings.
Today's results leave sophomore Alex Slovic as the final Husky in the tournament. Slovic was automatically entered into the main draw thanks to his preseason No. 14 ranking. Main draw play begins tomorrow and continues until Oct. 10.
The All-American Championships are the first of three individual national championships in collegiate tennis. Slovic will try to keep the title in the hands of a Washington player, as senior Alex Vlaski captured the crown in 2003 but is taking the fall season off to play professionally.
