Beavers Fall To UCLA In Pacific-10 Opener, 4-1
Oct. 9, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Eight-ranked UCLA scored twice in the final 15 minutes to break open a close game and beat Oregon State 4-1 in Pacific-10 women's soccer Friday night at Drake Stadium. The Beavers (6-6-0 overall, 0-1-0) now visit Southern California on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Against UCLA (8-3-0, 1-0-0), the Beavers tied the game in the 48th minute on a penalty kick by Jodie Taylor. UCLA took the lead in the 56th minute, then added goals in the 76th and 90th minutes to wrap up the win.
'The game was closer than the score; it just got away from us in the last few minutes,' OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. 'We made a couple of errors in the back that led to goals and we didn't take advantage of some chances early on. Overall, I'm proud of the contribution the team made, but you can't make errors against a quality team like UCLA.
'Now we've just got to prepare for USC on Sunday. When you go into Pac-10 play on the road and come back with a win it's a good trip, so that's our goal.'
Taylor's penalty kick came after a hand ball in the penalty area. It was the freshman's 11th goal in 12 games this season, already moving her into a tie for fourth place on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders.
