Bruin Women Place Third At UCSD Triton Cross Country Invitational
Oct. 9, 2004
Eric Peterson's UCLA women's cross country team, ranked No. 25 this week in the U. S., on Saturday placed third at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, held in La Jolla. Individually, the Bruins were led by senior Carmen Winant, who placed 15th over the 6K course.
In the women's team scoring (top five squads), Oklahoma State finished first (46 points), followed by Portland (84), UCLA (99), Hawaii (144) and UCSD (148).
'The key element of this competition was to give these runners another competition to help decide who will run with our top performers next week at the Pre-NCAA meet,' said Peterson, in his 11th season coaching the Bruin women. 'Carmen Winant had a solid effort, leading our squad to a third-place team finish and the confidence that she showed today will assist her next week. Sarah West today ran the best race she has run in the last two years.
'Oklahoma State is a very strong, unranked squad,' he said. 'This is a hilly course, which makes for slower times, but also requires a gut-check effort from our athletes and that's how they responded today.'
The Bruin men did not compete in the team scoring and only had one runner - senior Nick Thornton, placing 64th (28:18.0) over the 8K course.
The majority of UCLA's top women and men's runners did not compete at today's Triton Invite. They are training through the weekend, preparing for Saturday's (Oct. 16) Pre-NCAA Invitational at Terre Haute, IN and hosted by Indiana State. Saturday's course at Indiana State will also host the upcoming 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championship, held Monday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, IN. Last season at the NCAA, the Bruin women finished seventh in the team standings, the highest placement for UCLA since 1985.
