Arizona State Soccer Edges Washington State, 2-1 in OT
Oct. 10, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. - Elizabeth Bogus' Golden Goal with 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime lifted Arizona State (5-6-1; 1-0-1 Pac-10) to a 2-1 victory over Washington State (5-5-2; 0-2-0 Pac-10) Sunday afternoon at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
With time running out the Sun Devils made one last run as Stephanie Ebner quickly passed the ball to Levise Robertson, who then passed it to a breaking Bogus as she got behind the WSU defender and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Katie Hultin for her 10th career game-winning goal.
The Devils dominated the majority of the game as they outshot the Cougars 25-4, including 6-0 in the two overtime periods and posted seven corner kicks.
ASU got on the board first in the 17th minute when Bogus served a beautiful cross to a breaking Katie Leahy, who then drilled the ball past the diving WSU goalkeeper.
However, the Cougars responded just two minutes later in the 19th minute as Alix Rustrum collected a loose ball off of a breakaway on the right wing and nailed the shot from about 10 yards out pass a diving Kim Bingham to equalize the match.
The Devils had several more scoring chances in the second half as one shot hit the post and Hultin made two tremendous saves.
In the first overtime, both teams tried to find a seam in each other's defense to break though, but could not. That set up the dramatic second overtime period.
Up next, the Devils will travel to the Bay Area to face California on Friday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m.
