SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16Oregon State at Eastern Washington Invitational; Cheney, Wash.; 12 noonOregon State at Jim Danner Invitational; Gresham, Ore.; 10:30 a.m.

After another bye week last week, the Beavers are ready to continue women's cross country competition.

Splitting up this week, eight Beavers will head to the Eastern Washington Invitational at Cheney, Wash., with the start set for 12 noon. Nine more OSU runners will go to the Nike/Jim Danner Invitational near Gresham, Ore., starting at 10:30 a.m.

'Both meets offer each group an opportunity to compete against a good group of people,' OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'We're just giving them the exposure, experience and travel before the Pac-10 meet.'

The Pacific-10 Championships will be Oct. 30 in San Francisco, Calif. The Beavers' only other meet prior to the conference championships will be the Oregon State Track Club Invitational on Oct. 23 in Corvallis' Avery Park.

The Eastern Washington Invitational will host other Division I teams besides Oregon State, including Washington State, Idaho, Montana, Eastern Washington; a squad from Calgary will also run.

'We need to have a race against a Division I field,' Sullivan said. 'That's why we're taking some ladies up to Eastern Washington.'

Representing the Beavers in Cheney will be Taylor Bryant, Lauren Denfeld, Noelle Harer, Neoma Palmer, Jean-Marie Peterson, Caitlin Poggi, Michelle Wilson and Ashley Younce.

'It's our last big meet for the runners going to Pac-10s,' Sullivan said. 'We're just looking to continue progressing and see how our training is coming.'

The runners going to the Jim Danner Invitational will face mostly Division II, Division III and junior college athletes at Blue Lake Park in Troutdale, near Gresham. The field includes Portland and Willamette, among others.

'It's an important race for them,' Sullivan said of the Beavers who will run at the Jim Danner Invitatinoal. 'It will determine our No. 9 and 10 runners for the Pac-10 meet.'

OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEET: Oregon State placed fifth overall in an 18-team field at the Willamette Invitational at Bush's Pasture Park on Oct. 2. Ashley Younce and Neoma Palmer led the way for the Beavers finishing 11th and 21st, respectively.

Idaho won the meet with 26 points with Washington finishing 12 points behind.

The individual champion was Mary Kamau of Idaho finishing in a time of 17 minutes 06.15 seconds. Younce finished in 17:29.57 and Palmer came in with a time of 17:47.67.

'Ashley's finish was pretty darn good. Her time was over a one-minute personal best from what she ran in high school,' Sullivan said of Younce, who is in her third year at OSU but hadn't competed from her prep days until this fall. 'And Neoma ran well, and she'd been off a little this week.'

Taylor Bryant, Julie Garcia, Ashley Larson and Tia Williams all had their first chances to shine in a collegiate meet for Oregon State. Bryant finished 69th with a time of 19:02.71, Garcia was 94th in 19:30.09, Larson was 167th with a time of 22:44 and Williams was 152nd in 21:29.41.

'Overall, it was a pretty good day,' OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'We were pleased. We were very happy with it and we got out of this meet exactly what we wanted - running against a big field in a big competition, and we survived.'

HEAD COACH KELLY SULLIVAN: Kelly Sullivan came to Oregon State in January, 2004 to re-start OSU's program after being head cross country and track and field coach at nearby Willamette University, a Division III school in Salem, Ore., since 1997. Sullivan was also an assistant coach at Auburn from 1984-96, and head coach at Clackamas Community College (Ore.) from 1980-84.

Sullivan, 47, guided Willamette's teams to three top-10 national finishes in cross country and track and coached 23 All-Americans, including five individuals who won national championships. t Auburn, he coached 36 All-Americans and at Clackamas he coached 24 NJCAA All-Americans.

Sullivan was an All-American in the steeplechase and cross country at Willamette before graduating in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in History and Education. A native of Nehalem, Ore., he graduated from Neah-Kah-Nie High.

OREGON STATE TAKES TO THE ROAD: Oregon State will spend at least the first season of its revived cross country and track programs without a home course or track. The Beavers will run in one meet in Corvallis, the Oregon State Track Club Invitational at Avery Park on Oct. 23; that's during OSU's Homecoming Weekend.
