Andrew, Nuess Lead Sun Devil Swimmers At Pentathlon

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University swimming team held the annual intrasquad pentathlon Saturday morning at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, which saw freshmen lead the way for both the men and women. Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) and CJ Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.) came out on top in their respective divisions.
The meet called for each swimmer to compete in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and the 200 IM. Cumulative times were totaled and the athletes were ranked within their gender.
For the women, Andrew led the way throughout the meet clocking a total time of 6:04.65 to come out on top by over 11 seconds. Senior Cara DeVinny (Mesa, Ariz.) pulled into the second slot following the final event where she swam a 2:09.03 in the 200 IM, putting her total time at 6:16.35. Sophomore Jill Kripps (Seattle, Wash.) finished less than two-tenths behind DeVinny with a time of 6:16.54 while Junior Heidi Schmidt (Visalia, Calif.) narrowly missed the third slot clocking a total time of 6:16.68 to come in fourth. Rounding out the top-five was Senior Florencia Szigeti (Mendoza, Argentina) who clocked the fastest 100 freestyle time of 51.65 and finished with a total time of 6:21.53.
On the men's side, Nuess took the lead following the backstroke (52.81) event and never relinquished it throughout the rest of the meet. He swam a total time of 5:27.06, finishing in the lead by over 4 seconds. Junior David Kolozar (Budapest, Hungary) pulled into second after clocking a 1:54.58 in the 200 IM, which put him at a total time of 5:31.57. Senior Bobby Crowder (Los Gatos, Calif.) swam into third position with a total time of 5:33.15. Rounding out the top-five was Senior Kyle Horton (Scottsdale, Ariz.) with a total time of 5:39.88 and Junior Steve McDonald (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), who along with Kolozar swam the fastest butterfly leg at 51.81, finished fifth overall with a time of 5:40.20.
The ASU swimming and diving team returns to action Friday, October 22 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center as they open the dual meet season against UNLV. Events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
