Ghebray, Guangul, Jones Pace Cal at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The California men's cross country team finished eighth with 277 points at the Penn State National Cross Country Meet Saturday morning at the Blue-White Golf Courses. The Bear women placed 19th with 500 points.

American won the 38-team men's competition with 49 points, followed by Penn (82) and host Penn State (135). In the women's race, No. 2 Providence held off No. 6 Duke, 49 points to 60. No. 24 West Virginia was third with 194 points in the 41-team event.

Ryan Sheehan, who was running unattached, won the men?s 5.2-mile race in a time of 25:22. Cal junior Giliat Ghebray led the Bears, placing 11th in 25:53, and senior Girmay Guangul wasn't far behind in 16th (26:03). Ghebray also led the team at the Roy Griak Invitational last month. Also scoring for Cal today were junior Kevin Davis (59th, 26:45) and freshmen Chris Chavez (107th, 27:12) and Stephen Pottey (108th, 27:12).

Providence's Kim Smith took top honors in the women's 6000-meter competition in a time of 19:46. Cal sophomore Samantha Jones paced Cal for the third time in 2004, grabbing 65th in 22:24, and junior Maja Ruznic took 101st (22:45). The other Bears' scorers were senior Chloe Jarvis (119th, 23:04), freshman Rebecca Yau (129th, 23:07) and sophomore Pippa Macdonald (131st, 23:07).

The Bears take next week off before hosting the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, Oct. 30 in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
