Oct. 16, 2004

Folsom, Ca - The Stanford men's cross country team, the two-time defending NCAA champions, raced to the team title at the Sacramento State Open on Friday at Folsom High School.

Stanford scored 18 points and had seven of the top nine finishers. Stanford's Robert Smitson won the individual title with a time of 15:18.1 over 5,000 meter course. Forrest Tadhooahnippah finished third in a time of 15:25.1. The race had been scheduled for 8,000 meters but was changed to 5,000 meters due to poor air quality caused by local forest fires.

Leah Sawyer was Stanford's lone competitor in the women's 5,000 meters, and finished eighth (19:54.7).

The Stanford men's and women's team will compete in the Pre-NCAA's on Saturday in Terre Haute, In.
