Oct. 18, 2004
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Running back J.J. Arrington of California, safety Oshiomogho Atogwe of Stanford and kicker Alexis Serna of Oregon State have been named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Football Players of the Week.
Atogwe, a senior from Windson, Ont., Canada, keyed Stanford's defense in the Cardinal's 23-17 road win at Washington State. Atogwe had a team-high nine tackles, eight solo, and intercepted a fourth-quarter pass to help protect Stanford's 23-17 lead. The Cardinal defense picked off three Washington State passes and limited the Cougars to 4-of-14 on third-down conversions and 0-for-2 on fourth-down attempts.
Named Second-Team All-Pac-10 a year ago, Atogwe has been named to the Thorpe Award 'Watch List.' The award honors the top defensive back in college football. He is currently second on the team in tackles (39) and interceptions (2) and he leads the team in pass breakups (4) and forced fumbles (2).
Arrington, a senior from Nashville, North Carolina, played a key role in California's 45-28 win against UCLA. Arrington rushed 29 times for a career-high 205 yards (7.1-yard average) and two touchdowns. It was a Cal-record fifth consecutive 100-yard rushing game for Arrington and the highest rushing total for a Golden Bear runner since 1984. The California offense amassed 290 yards rushing and 550 yards total offense against the Bruins. It marks the third week in a row a California player has been named offensive player of the week, as Arrington follows wide receiver Chase Lyman and quarterback Aaron Rodgers in picking up the honor.
Serna, a freshman from Fontana, Calif., accounted for 17 points in playing a major role in Oregon State's 29-14 win at Washington, the Beavers' first win at Seattle since 1985. Serna was a perfect five-for-five on field goal attempts, connecting from 23, 36, 55, 31 and 27 yards. The five field goals made is an Oregon State single-game record and ties the Pac-10 record for field goals made in a Conference game. Serna's 55-yard field goal is the longest in the Pac-10 this year.
Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were wide receivers Dwayne Jarrett of USC and Demetrius Williams of Oregon, quarterbacks Derek Anderson of Oregon State and Drew Olson of UCLA and tackle Calvin Armstrong of Washington State. Also nominated on defense were end Bill Swancutt of Oregon State, linebacker Lofa Tatupu of USC, and backs Aaron Gipson of Oregon, Hamza Abdullah of Washington State and Donnie McCleskey of California. Punter Tom Malone of USC, kicker Michael Sgroi of Stanford and punt returners Justin Phinisee of Oregon and Michael Bumpus of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
