Final Round Rained Out At Wolf Pack Classic

Oct. 19, 2004

RENO, Nev.- -

The final round of the Wolf Pack Classic was cancelled Tuesday morning due to rain and severely windy conditions at the par-72 Wolf Run Golf Club.

Oregon State placed second, seven strokes behind Lamar. Tournament host Nevada took third.

'The guys were really disappointed when they called the tournament,' said OSU head coach Brian Watts.

'We had made up six shots in six holes when the decision was made on the student athletes' behalf to cancel the tournament.'

The Beavers were led by sophomore Ryan Gilmour, who shared individual medalist honors with Charlie Soule of Denver and Dawie VanDerWalt of Lamar with a 5-under 139.

This is Gilmour's first collegiate title. His previous best was a fifth place finish at last year's Northwest Collegiate Classic, his first collegiate tournament.

'Ryan was ready to win today,' said Watts.

'After going out last week and shooting two rounds in the 60s, then to do the same this week, Ryan was confident going into today's round.

'It's great that we were in second, but unfortunate that the guys couldn't compete for 54 holes.'

Senior Brad Simpson also cracked the top ten with a 2-under 142, good enough to tie him for tenth place.

Freshman Vincent Johnson and sophomore Mitch Gillis tied for 25th overall with two-round totals of 146.

Sophomore Jonathan Green ended tied for 68th.

The Beavers have placed second or better in three of four tournaments this season, including victories at the Northwest Collegiate Classic and the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.

'This is great for our program as we continue to build confidence and play well together as a team.

'The guys are really coming into their own and gelling and it's exciting to watch as we continue to give ourselves opportunities to win golf tournaments.'

OSU's final tournament of the fall season will be the Turtle Bay Collegiate, Nov. 1-3 in Kahuku, Haw.
