THIS WEEK: The Washington State University women's swim team will open its season Friday against San Jose State at Gibb Pool. The meet will begin at 6 p.m...the Cougars defeated the Spartans last season in San Jose 163-97...WSU has won the past three meetings between the teams...Cougars hold a 10-2 all-time record against SJSU...the Spartans are currently 2-0 after victories against UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis.

COACH QUAM: WSU Head Coach Erica Quam is in her third season as the women's swimming coach.

THIS SEASON: The Cougars added eight newcomers to the 14 returning letterwinners.

LAST SEASON: Five swimmers placed on the Cougar all-time top 10 list at the Pacific-10 Championships...top finishers included Lindsay Backhouse in the 100 and 200 backstroke, Jane Copland and Monika Povilonyte in the breaststroke events...Erin McCleave recorded a school record in the 200 freestyle.

ACADEMICS: WSU finished first in the nation academically spring semester 2004 with a 3.66 grade point average...Cougars finished fourth in the fall of 2003 with a GPA of 3.489.

UP NEXT: After beginning the season at home, the Cougars head to Stockton, Calif., for the Pacific Invitational at the University of the Pacific, Oct. 29-30....the Arkansas Razorback swimming team will be in Pullman Nov. 6 to take on the Cougars...the Nov. 19 dual meet against the Huskies in Pullman is the first Pac-10 competition of the 2004-05 season for the Cougars.
