Stanford Story: The Cardinal hosted Pac-10 foes Arizona and Arizona State last weekend ... the Wildcats posted their first-ever win over Stanford with a goal in the 108th minute on Friday, but the Cardinal rebounded and dropped the Sun Devils, 2-1, on Sunday ... senior Emilee Shim scored her first collegiate goal, the game-winner against Arizona State ... Stanford has started the year with a 9-3-2 record, 1-1-1 in Pac-10 play ... senior co-captain Marcie Ward leads the team with 13 points on six goals and one assist, while junior Leah Tapscott trails with 11 points on four goals and three assists ... senior co-captain Nicole Barnhart is ranked No. 13 in the nation with a 0.493 goals-against average, after giving up only seven goals in the first 14 games.
Cardinal vs. Bruins: The Stanford-UCLA series is tied up at 5-5-2 ... last season, the teams battled to a 0-0 tie ... the Cardinal was victorious in 2002, winning a 1-0 decision in Los Angeles.
UCLA Update: UCLA holds a 10-4-0 overall record, with a 3-1-0 mark in conference play ... the Bruins are the highest ranked team in the Pac-10, checking in at No. 7 in the NSCAA/adidas poll this week ... last week, the Bruins traveled to Washington, where they lost to the Cougars, 1-0, but then tallied a 5-1 victory over the Huskies on Sunday ... five Bruins have scored double-digits in points this season, with Bristyn Davis leading the way with 25 on 10 goals and five assists ... Valerie Henderson has been tending goal and owns a .88 goals-against average.
Cardinal vs. Trojans: Stanford leads the overall series with USC 8-2-1 and is undefeated in the last five meetings ... the Cardinal has won each of the last two meetings, 2-0.
Southern California Stats: Unranked USC is 8-5-1 on the season with a 2-2-0 mark in the Pac-10 coming into this weekend ... the Trojans will face California on Friday night before matching up with Stanford on Sunday ... Rosa Anna Tantillo leads the Women of Troy with 21 points on nine goals and three assists ... Veronica Simonton has started nine games for USC in goal, earning a .81 goals-allowed average and recording 29 saves.
Pac-10 Points: No team in the Pac-10 is undefeated after the second weekend of play ... UCLA and Arizona are tied for the top spot with a 3-1-0 record, while Arizona State trails with a 2-1-1 mark ... only Oregon is winless in conference play with an 0-3-0 record.
Tapscott Trivia: Junior midfielder Leah Tapscott was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Oct. 4 after helping the Cardinal to a 0-0 tie at Santa Clara and a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's ... Tapscott scored the game-winner against the Gaels ... the weekly conference honor is the first in her career and the first of the season for Stanford.
Barnhart Bullets: Senior goalie Nicole Barnhart was called up to the U.S. National Team last week and earned her first cap ... she has been named to the Soccer America and College Sports Television (CSTV) Preseason All-America teams, as well as the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List ... the two-time All-American is co-captain of the Cardinal for the second-straight season ... she is one shutout away from moving up to No. 2 in the school record books for career shutouts ... with five blankings to her credit this season, Barnhart has recorded 34 in her career.
National Team Notes: Goalie Nicole Barnhart earned her first cap with the U.S. Senior National Team on Oct. 15 -as a forward ... The U.S. matched up against Mexico in Kansas City, Mo., on its Fan Celebration Tour, and Barnhart was called into the game after starting forward Angela Hucles rolled her ankle in the 81st minute and had to leave the match ... as the USA has already used all of its available substitutes, back-up goalkeeper Barnhart was sent into the game to play forward ... it is the first time in USA history that a goalkeeper has played in the field (although Mia Hamm played in goal during the 1995 Women's World Cup).
Rankings Report: With eight wins in the last 11 games, the Cardinal moved into the No. 18 spot in the NSCAA/adidas poll ... after splitting with the Arizona schools last week,, the Cardinal is ranked No. 18 in Soccer Times, No. 10 in Soccer America and No. 8 in Soccer Buzz.
