Cal Women's Swimming Tops Florida State, 147-126

BERKELEY, CA - The California women's swim team had an impressive showing Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex, defeating Florida State, 147-126. The Golden Bears (3-0) won all 14 swimming events (Cal swam exhibition in the 100 fly, 200 IM and 200 free relay), paced by junior Helen Silver, sophomore Erin Reilly and freshman Emily Silver, who captured two events apiece.

Helen Silver won both the 100 back (56.76) and 200 back (2:01.92), Reilly placed first in the 1000 free (10:03.81) and 200 fly (2:04.37), while Emily Silver won the 50 free (23.91) and 100 free (51.77). The Silver sisters hail from Bainbridge Island, Wash.

Other individual winners for Cal included senior Lauren Medina in the 200 free (1:50.61), freshman Genevieve Patterson in the 100 breast (1:03.69), senior Marcelle Miller in the 200 breast (2:19.38) and junior Ashley Chandler in the 500 free (4:56.93). The Bears also won the 200 medley relay to start the meet (1:44.40, Sherry Tsai, Patterson, Rachel Ridgeway, Emily Silver).

Even though their results did not count in the final score, Cal had the fastest time in the 200 free relay (1:35.31, Reilly, Medina, Keiko Amano, Emily Silver), the 200 IM (Tsai, 2:04.81) and the 100 fly (Reilly, 56.83).

A highlight for Florida State was its diving team. Senior Courtney McClaw placed first in both the one-meter (306.45) and three-meter (279.525) competition with scores that qualified her for the NCAA Zone B. Sophomore Brittany Lerew also qualified for Zone B by placing second in the one-meter (272.025) and three-meter (271.05) competition.

The Bears will next host Pac-10 foe Oregon State, Friday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
