Beavers Compete First Time In Corvallis; Last Time Before Pac-10s

Oct. 23, 2004

Corvallis, Ore. - Saturday marked the last regular season meet for all but ten runners on the Oregon State cross country team as they competed in Corvallis, Ore. in Avery Park.

And the Oregon State Track Club Invitational was Oregon State's first varsity cross country race in Corvallis since a men's meet in 1980, and the last time the women ran a varsity cross country race in Corvallis was 1979.

'That makes it even more special,' head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'And [former OSU head coach] Berny Wagner was here today, and we had a number of students out here today, so it was pretty fun. Then to kind of merge with the Oregon State Track Club and kind of have our first activity with them, and to have Bob [De Carolis, Oregon State's athletic director] come out today and be the starter was all kind of a great atmosphere for us.'

Junior Katie Magnuson led the Beavers finishing 15th in the 64-runner field. Senior Marcie Aker and junior Jaime Fuller came in behind her in 20th and 21st place, respectively.

The University of Oregon's Running Club swept the top three spots with Sopagna Epp winning the race in a time of 21 minutes and 39.65 seconds.

Magnuson finished in 24 minutes and 14.78 seconds, while Aker finished in a time of 24 minutes and 24.64 seconds and Fuller came in right behind her in 24 minutes and 25.78 seconds.

'I'm real pleased. I like the fact that it's not a championship atmosphere and all that sort of stuff, that they're getting the opportunity to compete but they're not treating it like one. It was really fun to see,' Sullivan said. 'That was Katie Magnuson's first race; if she'd been healthier this season, she'd have been in our top five but she got injured during the summer, and we've had to bring her back slowly. I know she was apprehensive today but she ran really well.'

In her first collegiate race, junior Erin Clark finished 45th with a time of 26 minutes and 4.9 seconds.

'I'm really pleased because what we did with them this week [in practice] is what we'll do with the other kids next week, and they looked fresh and bouncy and all that, so hopefully what we did with this group will work next week with the other group (at the Pacific-10 Championships),' Sullivan said.

Oregon State's next race is Oct. 30 at the Pac-10 Championships in San Francisco, Calif.
