UW Women Compete At ITA Northwest Championships

Oct. 23, 2004

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Washington's women's tennis team hit the courts today for early round action at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships held on the Stanford campus. The large field of singles and doubles competitors are fighting to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second national championship of the collegiate tennis season.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 4-7 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, joining qualifiers from other regions as well as at-large selections and small school national champions.

Senior All-American Dea Sumantri is the tournament's third seed and advanced into the third round after an opening round bye and a straight set win in her second round match. 16th-seeded junior Dinka Hadzic and freshman Allison Rainey both picked up a pair of easy wins on the day to move on to Saturday's action.

A group of youthful Dawgs including sophomores Saskia Nauenberg and Stephanie Svanfeldt, and freshmen Tara Simpson and Cassy Fabiani all notched first round victories, but each were ousted in the second round of play.

In the doubles draw, Sumantri and Hadzic are seeded second and picked up an 8-6 second round win over a pair from UC Davis, following a first round bye. The two upperclassmen are the only UW doubles duo left heading into the weekend.

The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first event - the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships - was held earlier this month, and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field.

Third and fourth round singles matches and third round doubles matches take place on Saturday, with the finals for both singles and doubles played on Monday, Oct. 25.
