Oregon State Beats Washington State In Women's Soccer 1-0
Oct. 24, 2004
Corvallis, Or. - Jodie Taylor's goal gave Oregon State its second Pacific-10 victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, beating Washington State 1-0 at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The win raises the Beavers to 8-7-0 on the year and 2-3-0 in the Pac-10, while bringing the Cougars to 7-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in conference.
'We played well today,' OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. 'WSU is a good team, they have a good coach, they are well put together, disciplined and organized. We kept our shape together, we kept up our discipline,we worked hard for each other because we were tired after Friday.'
Taylor scored an unassisted goal in the 26th minute. Taylor took on a Cougar defender, dribbling around her and shooting into the upper right corner from 15 yards out past goalkeeper Katie Hultin's reach.
The goal was Taylor's 14th on the year, bringing her to 30 points (14 goals, 2 assists) and on pace to break OSU's Val Williams' single-season scoring record of 47 points. Taylor is in third place on OSU's all-time single-season lists for both goals and points.
'Obviously Jodie's goal was a little bit of magic,' Fennah said. Fennah also praised junior forward Stacey Mescher for her standout performance Sunday, saying her movement and effort around the field were key to the Beavers' victory.
Despite the Cougars outshooting the Beavers 7-2 during the second half, WSU was unable to score.
'The whole backline did a great job,' Fennah said. 'It was a great day for Lauren Wippel, Melena Ertler had a tremendous game, Alison Vislay and Monica Storm were great in the middle. We did tremendous around the rest of the field, midfielder Janelle Joy covered every inch of the field, it was really a great game for us. We showed better composure with the ball under pressure, and we made the right decisions with the ball more often.'
The Beavers will be on the road next week, taking on California on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
