WASHINGTON reaches the midway point of league play with a two-game lead, but must play five of its final nine league matches on the road... Second half of conference action gets underway with the Washington schools visiting the Oregon schools, the Arizona schools heading to Los Angeles, and Stanford and California clashing in Berkeley... It's down to two - Washington joins Hawaii as the nation's only unbeaten teams... Thursday's match between Washington and Oregon State will be the FSN match of the week... PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CHRISSIE ZARTMAN, UCLA
UCLA libero Chrissie Zartman has been named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 18-24, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced.
Zartman, a senior from Hermosa Beach, Calif., helped UCLA sweep Oregon and Oregon State on the road, collecting 49 digs in the process to become the Pac-10's all-time digs leader. In the win at Oregon, she tallied 24 digs, posting eight digs in each game of the match. Against Oregon State, with starting setter Krystal McFarland (second on the team in digs per game average) sidelined with an injury, Zartman posted 25 digs.
She averaged 6.12 digs per game, nearly a full dig above her average entering last weekend's matches.
Her career digs total stands at 1,708, passing former USC player Katie Haller (1,702 digs) on the Pac-10's all-time list.
This is the first weekly honor for Zartman, and UCLA's 46th Pac-10 Player of the Week all-time.
ARIZONA - The Wildcats have won four of their last five... Arizona hit .383 in its win over Arizona State. It's the best attack percentage by the Cats' in a Pac-10 match this season... After hitting just .150 through the first four matches of league play, Arizona is hitting .297 over the last five matches... Senior MB Jolene Killough hit .900, collecting nine kills in 10 attempts against Arizona State. She also added four blocks... Arizona has been ranked in 96 of the last 105 AVCA Coaches Polls.
ARIZONA STATE - Sophomore OH Nicole Morton has posted double digit kill figures in each of the last six matches. She's reached double figure kills in 15 of 18 matches played this season... Freshman L Sydney Donahue has collected double digit dig totals in each of the last six matches, and has posted double digits digs in 13 of 18 matches played this season... A pair of freshmen lead the Sun Devils in blocking - MB Colette Meek(75 total blocks) and S Rachel Mittelstaedt (56 total blocks).
CALIFORNIA - California has had three or more players reach double figure kills in a match 12 times this season, including 10 of the last 12 matches... Freshman OH Angie Pressey has led the Bears in kills in eight matches this season, including the last three matches... Senior MB Camille Leffall hit .567 with 18 kills in 30 attempts with just one error in the split with the Washington schools. Leffall is hitting a school-record .360 for her career.
OREGON - Senior L Katie O'Neil picked up 35 digs (5.83 dpg) in losses to UCLA and USC. With the large number of digs, she pushed her season average from 4.30 dpg to 4.50 dpg... Junior OH Kelly Russell recorded a double-double against UCLA with 10 kills and a career-high 19 digs... Sophomore S Heather Madison needs 67 assists to reach 1,000 for her career... The Ducks are in search of their first Pac-10 win at home since defeating Washington in Eugene on Nov. 9, 2000. That's a string of 39 Pac-10 matches.
OREGON STATE - Junior S Desma Stovall needs three assists to reach 1,000 for her career... Senior OH Allison Lawrence tallied a season-high 23 digs against UCLA... For the sixth time this season, and the third time in Pac-10 play this year, the Beavers had four players reach double figure kill numbers in a match when Lawrence (18), Katelyn Healy (16), Amanda Eggert (13) and Kristin Murray(12) pulled the feat against UCLA.... Healy tallied 27 kills (3.38 kpg) and hit .373 against USC and UCLA.
STANFORD - Senior opposite Jennifer Hucke picked up nine blocks (1.50 bpg) last weekend. She has tallied three or more blocks in eight of the last 10 matches... In Pac-10 matches only, senior OH Ogonna Nnamani leads the league with a 6.00 kills per game average. That's 1.17 kpg better then the next player - Arizona's Kim Glass (4.83 kpg)... In two league losses, Stanford is hitting .208, while it is hitting at a .312 clip in its seven league wins.
UCLA - Senior L Chrissie Zartman is now the Pac-10's all-time digs leader with 1,708 digs... Sophomore S Tammy Jackson filled in for senior Krystal McFarland, who sprained an ankle at Oregon. In her first career start, Jackson responded with career-highs in assists (66) and digs (14)... Sophomore MB Nana Meriwether has recorded 25 total blocks over the last four matches (1.67 bpg).
USC - Junior MB Bibiana Candelas hit .581 with 28 kills (4.67 kpg) on 43 attempts with just three errors in the sweep over the Oregon schools. She hit .500 with 13 kills at Oregon State, then followed that up with a .684 attack percentage and 15 kills at Oregon... Senior MB Emily Adams upped her league-leading hitting percentage to .454 after hitting .513 (23 kills on 39 attempts with three errors) against the Oregon schools. Adams is on pace to break the Pac-10 single-season record for hitting percentage held my former Arizona Wildcat Marisa DaLee (.437 in 2000).
WASHINGTON - Washington set a school record for attendance when 5,712 fans witnessed the Huskies three-game sweep over Stanford. It's the fourth highest attendance figure in Pac-10 history... The victory over the Cardinal was just the second home win over Stanford in Seattle, and the first time ever that Washington has swept Stanford... Washington hit a combined .359 in its victories over Stanford and California... Junior MB Darla Myhre had an error-free weekend as she tallied 13 kills in 28 attempts (.464). She also collected 14 blocks (2.33 bpg).
WASHINGTON STATE - Sophomore MB Jen Barcus, senior L Stacey Holbrook and sophomore OH Kelly Rosin have played in all 80 games this season... The Cougars look to snap a 10-match conference losing streak. The last time Washington State dropped 10 straight in league play was during the 1989 season... Sophomore MB Jennifer Todd needs three block assists to reach 200 for her career. She currently ranks 10th on the WSU career list for block assists with 197.
