Cal Men's Golf Finishes 11th at Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge

Oct. 26, 2004

Bandon, OR - The Cal men's golf team placed 11th Tuesday at the inaugural Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, played at The Bandon Dunes Golf Resort near the Oregon coastal town of Bandon. The Golden Bears, the defending 2004 national champions, shot a first round score of 305 (+17) Monday, but finished with a 311 Tuesday for a 611.

Minnesota won the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge with a score of 596 (304, 292), edging out USC (595; 298, 298) in a tie-breaker (the predetermined tie-breaker was the non-counting or fifth-man score, and the Gophers won the battle by two strokes). 36 holes were supposed to be played Monday, but rain shortened the second round. The event was reduced to 36 holes, with the final round played Tuesday.

In the conference challenge, the Pac-10 won the event with combined score of a plus-162 to the Big Ten's plus-191. Each conference counted its low six scores of each round to determine the challenge winner.

Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares, the 2003 NCAA individual medalist, was the tournament champion after shooting a 142 (71, 71, -2) for the two days. Cal's best finisher was freshman Michael Jensen, who tied for 28th after shooting a 153 (74, 79, +9). Other scores for the Bears included redshirt freshman Kyle Dowden (tied 33rd, 77, 77, +10) and senior Jeff Hood (tied 33rd, 76, 78, +10) at 154; junior Fredrik Svanberg at 155 (tied 41st, 78, 77, +11) and sophomore Brandon Beck at 160 (tied 57th, 78, 82, +16).
