OSU Takes Seventh At Kent Youel Invitational

Oct. 27, 2004

KAPOLEI, Haw.- -

The Oregon State women's golf team closed out the fall season Wednesday by placing seventh in the Kent Youel Invitational at the par-72 Kapolei Golf Course. The Beavers finished seventh with a three-round total of 911.

'This was our best score of the year and it's good to end the fall season on a positive note,' said OSU head coach Risë Lakowske.

OSU was led by Hawai'i native Leah Whiting, who tied for 14th with a 7-over 223 after firing a final-round 75. This is Leah's third-best three-round total as a Beaver and her best finish since she tied for fifth in the 2002 OSU Shanico Invitational, her first collegiate tournament.

'We didn't have too many birdies today and our finish was all right, but not phenomenal,' added Lakowske.

'But Leah's 75 helped out a lot.'

Sophomore Jill Ferrante also cracked the top 20 by finishing tied for 19th, just one stroke behind Whiting. Ferrante's 224 is a career-best at Oregon State, as was her second-round 69.

UCLA dominated wire-to-wire and took the team title by 19 strokes over Arizona State. The Bruins posted the only two team totals under par on Tuesday and cruised to the win Wednesday, finishing with a 5-under 859.

The Bruins monopolized the top three individual spots as UCLA's Amie Cochran edged out teammate Susie Mathews by one stroke to earn individual medalist honors with a 4-under 212. Second-round leader Charlotte Mayorkas took third.

Freshman Julie Uhrik tied for 42nd with a 233.

Sophomore Lindsay Eide finished tied for 49th and senior Alex Lucio tied for 54th.

Lakowske is optimistic about the team's potential improvement before play resumes in the spring:

'We are looking forward to the spring season.'

The Beavers now have a few months off to get ready for the Arizona \Invitational, Feb. 21-22 in Tucson, Ariz.
