Slovic Bound For ITA National Indoor Championships
Oct. 29, 2004
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The singles and doubles fields for next week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, the second of three national championships for collegiate tennis this season, were announced this week by the ITA. Washington sophomore Alex Slovic will be among those competing for the coveted championship, which runs from Nov. 4-7.
The 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament for Division I, will be hosted by Michigan at its Varsity Tennis Center for the second straight year. The event features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field, including: champions from ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the past two weeks, the ITA National Small College champions, the champions of the All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made last week by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships, all trying to make this elite field.
Slovic, the nation's 14th-ranked player and last year's ITA Rookie of the Year, is off to a 4-1 start following the All-American Championships held earlier this month. In that tournament, Slovic lost his first round match but then proceeded to win his next four to win the consolation bracket. Slovic also has some experience at the National Indoors as he and teammate Alex Vlaski competed in the doubles draw last year.
