Oct. 30, 2004
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Junior midfielder Jeff Hoover's goal in the 89th minute helped the fifth-ranked Washington men's soccer team maintain its unbeaten Pac-10 record, as the Huskies defeated No. 17 Stanford, 1-0, at Maloney Field Friday evening.
Hoover's goal, his first of the season, came with just over a minute remaining in regulation, at the 88:12 minute mark. Sophomore defender Will Flanagan sent a cross from the right side to Hoover, who volleyed the ball past Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen.
The win marked Washington's 10th shutout this year, as the Huskies improved to 11-3-2 and 4-0-1 in the Pac-10. Stanford falls to 6-4-5 overall and 1-3-2 in conference action. These teams battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw in Seattle, in their previous meeting, Oct. 12.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander, who tallied three saves versus the Cardinal, has allowed just two goals in five of the last six games, those goals being scored by Stanford in the earlier season meeting.
The Huskies will take their six-game unbeaten streak to No. 18 California, as these teams square off Sunday, Oct. 31, at 2:30 p.m. in Berkeley.
