Post Game Quotes
UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell
Wow - was that a great victory or what? I'll take that. That was a great response by the team. We had a tough stretch on the road the last two weeks. There was a lot of doubt around us. It was nice to see the character we all talked about. It's a great feeling to have this kind of victory. Our defense really came out to play at the perfect time. We got a shutout against a very good offense, stopped the running game and did great things in pass coverage and got some interceptions. That was a good young defense you saw today. Offensively, we did not have as much production as normal, but it was good enough. We controlled our position in the second half.
Overall it was a great victory, we're very pleased in the locker room, but now we're off to Washington State. It was a great display of character, heart and passion, really responding to what happened a week ago.
Our defensive line played very well. We were able to put pressure on the quarterback without really blitzing all that much. We used our four-man rush very effectively, and they did a tremendous job applying pressure on the quarterback all day.
(Asked if he was surprised about the shutout) No, not at all. We knew this performance was coming. We had a great week of practice.
We knew this stretch was going to be important. It's good to get this performance today. Last week we didn't finish the game. It was good to see how we could sustain today.
Our attitude is strong; we're a cohesive, strong-knit team. We worked hard in the off-season to build that feeling.
(On Maurice Drew) He had some good runs today. We put a lot of expectations on him, but he always finds the end zone and scores touchdowns. He's doing exactly what we've asked him to do. Teams have got their attention on him, and a lot of teams are geared to stop No. 21.
Stanford Head Coach Buddy Teevens
You can't win if you don't score. Defensively I thought we played well. We just weren't productive offensively. They dared us to run the ball, and we couldn't. We had some open receivers we missed; we had some dropped passes that hurt us. What I told the guys at the end is that it's a team deal. The offense didn't carry its end of the bargain. Defensively, we did what we came to do. We played hard. Also, on special teams, we broke down and gave up that big return.
(On the UCLA defense) They played like a great defensive team today. Are we surprised to get shut out? Yes. We're better than that offensively. We didn't make any big plays today. We had a couple of turnovers. We just couldn't capitalize on that.
(On Trent Edwards) He's had sharper days, but he made some big throws as well. They forced us into throwing the ball successfully by taking the running game away.
