Oct. 31, 2004
Stanford, Cal. -
Oregon State fell to No. 17 Stanford 2-0 in Pacific-10 men's soccer Friday afternoon in Stanford. The Beavers drop to 5-10-1 overall and 0-6-0 in Pacific-10 play. The win for Stanford (7-4-5 overall, 2-3-2 Pacific-10) is it's seventh of the season and the second of it's conference schedule.
The Beavers played an evenly matched game against the No. 17 Cardinal, but made a few crucial mistakes that ended up costing OSU the game.
'I thought we played very well,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'We just made two key mistakes that they scored on.'
Scoring opportunities were close with Stanford leading OSU in shots, 12-8, and the Beavers leading in corner kicks, 5-2.
'We had lots of energy and we moved the ball against them,' Taylor said. 'But we couldn't quite put it all together.'
Stanford got two scores from forward Matt Janusz to pace the Cardinal offensive. The first goal came in the 28th minute off a Stanford goal kick. Stanford goalkeeper, Robby Fulton kicked the ball all the way down field where Janusz was able to head the ball past the Beaver defenders. Januszs' second goal came in the 74th minute off a penalty kick resulting from an OSU handball in the box.
'We still aren't learning our lessons,' Taylor said. 'We keep making the same mistakes.'
OSU plays again Friday at 2 p.m. when they square off against a non-league opponent in Humbolt State. The game will be held in Corvallis at Lorenz Field in Valley Stadium.
