Cal-Arizona State Postgame Quotes
Oct. 31, 2004
California head coach Jeff Tedford
'We hurt ourselves today. We had too many long yardage situations and too many sacks. We couldn't protect the passer. That's something we have to improve on.'
'When the defense plays like that, you always have a chance to win.'
'Give Arizona State credit. They have some guys who played very, very hard. That's a good group over there.'
Marshawn Lynch, Running back
General game statement
'The defense played great tonight. It was a wonderful game on their part for four quarters. It was something that, as an offense, we fed off.'
On the play of Cal's offense
'We knew we had to step it up. We knew we started off sluggish. It took a little time to get going but once it warmed up we put some points on the board.'
Arizona State head coach Dirk Koetter
'Minus 5 (turnover ratio) - that was the whole game. We're 92 percent in the red zone all year, but 0-3 tonight.'
'Cal's a very good football team, but we did that to ourselves. You're not going to beat anybody going -5 (in turnover margin).'
'We'll be back. It's frustrating to lose 27-0 even though Cal's a good team.'
On ASU QB Andrew Walter
'He didn't play well at all. He had a rough night.'
On Cal QB Aaron Rodgers
'He's as good as I've seen. He's a picture of efficiency. His mobility's improved. Tonight he broke out of some sacks. I hope he turns pro. He's definitely a first round pick.'
Andrew Walter, QB
'Five turnovers - we really shot ourselves in the foot. It was a combination of sloppy play and us being stupid. There are no moral victories. We played like crap. We gave them a short field. Throwing a pick for a touchdown doesn't help.'
'We have a great chance to finish 9-2. Now this game is over and we have to move on.'
Ishmael Thrower, Defensive End
On tonight's performance
'We came in with high hopes. We feel in our hearts that we can play with anybody. We had some tough breaks today. Turnovers really hurt us. Defensively I think we played well, well enough to win. Offensively we made too many mistakes, too many turnovers. You have to limit your mistakes against Cal because they're a great team. I give all the credit in the world to Cal. They capitalized on all mistakes and they beat us fair and square.
