TEMPE, Ariz. - Valuable experience was gained Friday and Saturday inside Wells Fargo Arena as 22 members of the Arizona State University wrestling team competed in the 2004 Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open. Of the Sun Devil entrants, Cain Velasquez produced the best showing with his fourth-place finish at 120kg while former Sun Devil and current assistant coach Eric Larkin took second at 66kg.

Velasquez advanced to the quarterfinals where he scored a technical fall victory over Steve Sniders to move into the semifinals. In the semis, the Sun Devil big man dropped a tough 3-0, 1-1, 1-1 decision to Mike Faust and was relegated to the consolation rounds. In the consolation semifinals, Velasquez defeated Clint Walbeck (4-3, 4-1) before and injury forced him to withdraw before the third place match and giving him fourth place.

Larkin opened his tournament run with a 6-0, 7-0 tech fall over Jamey Kasser before taking a tough second round victory over Chris Prickett, 3-2, 0-6, 5-1. After a 2-2, 5-1 defeat of Cleo Neube in the quarterfinals, Larkin bested Zack Roberson by scores of 1-1 and 6-0 to move into the finals where he dropped a 1-0, 3-1 decision to Chris Bono.

The 2004-05 season gets underway at the end of November with the Sun Devils heading to Fullerton, Calif., on Nov. 20, for the Cal State Fullerton Open.
