ARIZONA SITS IN DRIVER'S SEAT IN RACE FOR PAC-10 TITLEFour Points Assure Wildcats A Share of 1st League Crown
The ARIZONA Wildcats (14-4-0 overall, 5-2-0 Pac-10) can clinch at least a share of their first ever Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer title by posting four points in the final weekend of regular-season play... Manufacturing an impressive turn-around from a ninth-place tie in the league last season, the Wildcats can capture their first ever Pac-10 title outright if they were to win out, finishing with 21 total points... However, three teams are nipping closely at Arizona's heels -- the defending champion UCLA Bruins (12-6-0, 5-3-0), STANFORD Cardinal (12-4-2, 4-2-1) and ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils (8-8-1, 4-2-1) -- and could figure into the mix if the Wildcats do not win out.
Pac-10 tie-breakers: If two teams were to tie for the 2004 Pac-10 Championship, the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship would go to the winner of the head-to-head match... If more than two teams tie for the league championship, the automatic bid is awarded to the team with the best record against the other teams with which it is tied... The team with highest point total based on results of head-to-head competition shall be the automatic qualifier.
Last year, five Pac-10 teams received invitations to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, while six Pac-10 teams comprised the Tournament field in 2002... Five Conference teams competed in the 2001 Tournament, while a league-record seven teams were among the field of 64 in 2000.
