BERKELEY - Junior guard Richard Midgley scored 20 points and sophomore forward Dominic McGuire grabbed 16 rebounds to lead California to an 80-53 exhibition victory over Chico State Tuesday night in Haas Pavilion.
In addition, junior center Rod Benson posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, while sophomore forward Marquise Katley added 11 points.
The Bears took their first 10-point lead at 22-12 with 9:40 left in the first half and extended their advantage to 48-31 at intermission. Cal shot 47.5 percent from the floor in the first half, while holding Chico State to just 36.7 percent.
Both teams made only 32 percent from the field in the second stanza, as the Bears' lead never fell below 14 points.
Midgley sank 6-of-12 three-pointers, going 5-for-7 from behind the arc after the break.
Reserve Chuck Webster led Chico State with 14 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field.
Cal opens the regular season Nov. 11-12 when the Bears host the first two rounds of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. On day one, Cal will play UC Riverside, with Saint Mary's meeting Belmont. The winner of the two-day event advances to the tournament championship rounds in New York Nov. 18-19.
