Slovic Reaches Round Of 16 At ITA National Indoor Championships
Nov. 4, 2004
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Washington sophomore Alex Slovic posted the day's biggest upset in the first round of the ITA National Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center. The unseeded Husky knocked out one of the tournament's four 5-8 seeds, Ken Skupski of LSU in three sets. Slovic now advances to tomorrow's Round of 16.
The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three national championships in the college tennis season. They feature the most selective field, with only 32 singles participants and 16 doubles teams. Catalin Gard of Mississippi captured the year's first national championship--the All-American Championships--in October and is the top seed in the National Indoors.
Slovic was the only person to eliminate a seeded player in the day's action. He took the first set, 6-3, before Skupski rebounded for a 6-3 second set win. The deciding third set was all about Slovic, as he closed out the match with a 6-1 win. Slovic will play UCLA's Ben Kohlloeffel in the Round of 16 tomorrow. Round of 16 and quarterfinal singles matches will both be played on Friday.
