Sumantri Cruises In First Round At ITA National Indoors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Husky senior Dea Sumantri earned a first round victory in impressive fashion at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center this afternoon. Sumantri moves into the Round of 16 at the nation's second national championship of the year which continues tomorrow through Sunday, Nov. 7.
Sumantri, No. 11 in the ITA Rankings, ousted Robin Stephenson of Alabama in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Next up will be one of the nation's top freshmen, Riza Zalameda of UCLA, who upset 5-8 seed Jennifer Magley of Florida in the first round. Round of 16 and quarterfinal play both take place tomorrow.
The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three individual national championships for the college tennis season. The first was the ITA All-American Championships in October, which were won by undefeated freshman Audra Cohen of Northwestern. Cohen is the top seed in the ITA National Indoors. The third national championship of the season is the NCAA Championships, held in May. The ITA National Indoor Championships are the most selective of the three, with fields of only 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.
