Deason and Hodzic Perfect at First Day of Thunderbird Invitational

Tempe, Ariz. - Stanford freshmen Whitney Deason and Lejla Hodzic both posted a pair of wins in the singles main draw to open competition at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational today. The duo also picked up a win in doubles play to advance to the quarterfinals.

Deason, the No. 4 seed at the tournament, opened with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Michigan's Debra Streifler before knocking off Kady Pooler of Arizona State, 6-2, 6-4. Hodzic matched her teammate with a pair of wins, starting with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nina Yaftali of Michigan and following with a 6-2, 3-0 (retired) decision over Cal's Stephanie Kusano.

Deason and Hodzic, who advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Doubles Championship (but lost to teammates Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette), were awarded the No. 2 seed and began competition in Tempe with an 8-3 victory over Kansas State's Olga Klimova and Jessica Simosa.

The second-round of the main draw doubles will kick off tomorrow's action at 8:30 a.m. Quarterfinals play in the main singles draw will get underway at 9:30 a.m.
