PULLMAN, Wash. - No. 13 California blanked Washington State, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field. With their 11th shutout of the season, the Golden Bears improve to 11-4-3 (4-2-2 Pac-10), while the Cougars fall to 8-7-3 (3-4-1). The temperature was in the low 40s during the Pac-10 contest.
Cal freshman midfielder Chioma Igwe scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty kick in the 60th minute. The product of Belmont, Calif., had previously posted four assists in 2004. The penalty was called after a Cougar handball inside WSU's 18-yard box during a scramble resulting from a California corner kick.
The Bears outshot the Cougars, 7-6, and the shots were even at four in the first half. Seven different players recorded shots for Cal, six of them were on goal. Goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio recorded two saves for Cal.
Cal wraps up the regular season at No. 17 Washington Sunday, Nov. 7 at noon. The 64-team NCAA College Cup field will be announced at 1 p.m. PT on ESPNEWS on Monday, Nov. 8.
