Sam Warburg Moves on to Semifinals at ITA National Indoor Championships

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Senior Sam Warburg advanced to the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships with a pair of victories in singles play on Friday afternoon. Warburg also teamed with junior KC Corkery to post a quarterfinal win the doubles tournament, and will play a semifinal match on Saturday morning.
The No. 2 seed, Warburg posted a three set win over Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski in second round play, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. The senior then defeated Ben Kohlloeffel of UCLA in quarterfinal action, 6-3, 6-3. Warburg will play in the semifinals against the winner of Friday's quarterfinal match between San Diego's Pierrick Ysern and Kentucky's Jesse Witten.
Corkery and Warburg, the No. 2 seeded doubles tandem, advanced to the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones of Illinois. The duo will take on Michigan's Ryan Heller and Brian Hung in the semifinals on Saturday. The Michigan team handed Geoff Boyd and Brian Pomeroy of North Carolina an 8-2 defeat in quarterfinal action on Friday.
Corkery competed in the consolation singles bracket on Friday, advancing on a walk over against Georgia's John Isner. Corkery will face Indiana's Jakub Praibis in the second round of the consolation tournament, who advanced with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Arizona's Roger Matalonga.
The 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournaments for Division I men and women, will be hosted by Michigan at its Varsity Tennis Center for the second straight year. The event features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: champions from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the past two weeks, the ITA National Small College champions, the champions of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made last week by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
