Nov. 5, 2004
Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State women's soccer beat No. 10 Arizona 1-0 Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The win brings the Beavers to 9-9-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Pacific-10, while Arizona is 14-5-0 on the year and 5-3-0 in conference.
'We are very pleased,' OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. 'We felt good going into the game, we dealt with the threat that Arizona has been all year, they have been one of the best teams in the country all season long. We felt good about what we could do going into the game, and our kids did what they needed to do overall.'
Despite the Beavers being outshot by the Wildcats 9-3, the first half remained scoreless.
'We had a couple of lapses her and there,' Fennah said. 'We didn't get some pressure on, we didn't clear the ball early. But as the game went on, we got better at clearing the ball out of our box, we put it in their box a lot and faced pressure.'
The Beavers came back in the second half, with Monica Storm scoring off an assist from Janelle Joy in the 82nd minute of the game. Joy relayed a quick pass to Storm in the Wildcat's box, lofting the ball into the middle of the net past Arizona goalkeeper McCall Smith, sealing a victory for OSU.
'We were looking for opportunities to set plays and attack aggressively, we got a goal from such a play so it was good,' Fennah said. The Beavers close their Pac-10 season on Sunday, taking on Arizona State at 11 a.m. in Corvallis.
'Arizona State uses a little different tactics, we have to make sure we are ready for that on Sunday,' Fennah said.
