OSU upsets NO. 7 UCLA, 1-0
Nov. 7, 2004
Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State shut out the Pacific-10 leading and No. 7 UCLA Bruins 1-0 in Pacific-10 men's soccer Sunday afternoon in Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The win for the Beavers (6-10-1 overall, 1-6-0 Pac-10) is their second in a row and is their first Pacific-10 victory of the season. The Bruins (11-3-2, 6-2-0 Pac-10) will still clinch their third consecutive Pacific-10 title despite the loss.
The Beavers scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute from an off-balance Ryan Johnson who was able to put a side-volley past the UCLA goalie. Brett Gardner was credited with the assist on a free kick before the goal.
'The guys did really well,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'We finished on one great opportunity.'
UCLA led in shots 18-10 and in corner kicks 6-2. Despite the UCLA advantage in scoring opportunities, the Beavers controlled the tempo of the match for nearly the whole game until the final few minutes when the Bruins started threatening.
'We played within ourselves,' Taylor said. 'But it got a little hairy at the end when we started to get emotional.'
The game was a rough affair with a total of 38 fouls and three yellow cards between the two teams. Taylor emphasized that while the game was rough his players maintained composure to secure the victory.
'We were organized today we didn't make any silly mistakes.' Taylor said. 'A lot of players played real solid today.'
Oregon State finishes off its season next Sunday at home against Pacific-10 opponent University of Washington. The game will be played at 1 p.m. at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
