CORVALLIS, Ore. - Despite a sluggish start, Oregon State's women's basketball team recorded a 46-39 victory against Baden Sports in Sunday's exhibition opener.
Junior post Karen Vickery led the Beavers with 11 points, while making the first start of her career. Sophomore Casey Bunn, who redshirted the 2003-04 season due to an injury, added eight points a and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Both teams struggled holding onto the ball in the opening 20 minutes and OSU took a slim 23-22 lead into the break.
The Beavers shook off the first-game jitters in the middle of the second half and took their largest lead of the game, rattling off seven straight points and gaining a 35-27 advantage when walk-on Brittney Brown hit a lay-up.
Baden Sports narrowed the gap to 42-39 with just under three minutes remaining, but failed to score again.
'I thought in the second half we really picked up the defensive intensity and our rebounding was where it needs to be,' said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra.
The Beavers held Baden Sports to just 17 second half points and had a 52-35 rebounding advantage for the game.
Alicia Heathcote led Baden Sports with 12 points, finishing 5-for-20 from the floor.
