Cougars Prepare for NCAA Cross Country West Regional Meet

THIS WEEK: The Washington State men's and women's cross country teams compete with the best of the West at the NCAA West Regionals Saturday...the races will include teams from the Western Athletic, Pacific-10, Big Sky, West Coast and Big West Conferences...the women will run the 6,000m championship race at 11 a.m. followed by the men's 10,000m race at noon...the meet is hosted by Fresno State and additional information can be found at www.gobulldogs.com.
WSU WOMEN: The Cougar women harriers are led by seniors Ana Cabrera and Molly Bull along with freshman standout Haley Paul...Paul has paced the Cougar women with top finishes in the last several meets including a 24th place finish at the Pac-10 Championships in San Francisco...sophomores Natalie Smith, Kayle Peterson and Kelly Ramirez will also compete for WSU with freshman Collier Lawrence rounding out the team...the Washington State women will face top-ranked Pac-10 opponents Stanford (No. 1), Arizona State (No.7) and Washington (No. 25) along with Big West power UC Santa Barbara (No. 17).
WSU MEN: The Washington State men are led by seniors Mike Heidt and Danny Wolf...Wolf and Heidt have consistently combined as the Cougars top two finishers this year with Wolf running to an impressive ninth place finish at the Pac-10 Championships...sophomores Alex Grant and Andrew Jones along with redshirt sophomore Ryan Freimuth and redshirt freshmen Geoff Casazza and Daniel Frederick make up the rest of the WSU contingent...the Cougs will compete against the top Pac-10 programs of Stanford (No.2) and Arizona State (No. 8) along with ranked opponents Cal Poly (No. 6) and Northern Arizona (No. 28).
PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: At San Francisco Oct. 30, the Cougar women finished fifth; Haley Paul (24th), Kayle Peterson (27th), Ana Cabrera (42nd), Molly Bull (44th), Natalie Smith (49th), Kelly Ramirez (50th), and Collier Lawrence (61st) scored for WSU...the men finished seventh; Danny Wolf (9th), Mike Heidt (29th), Alex Grant (31st), Andrew Jones (32nd), Ryan Freimuth (43rd), Daniel Frederick (47th) and Geoff Casazza (53rd).
LAST YEAR AT NCAA WEST REGIONALS: The WSU men placed ninth at last year's competition at Gresham, Ore...Mike Heidt was the first Cougar to cross the finish line with a 29th place finish...Danny Wolf ran to a 39th place finish with Andrew Jones and Alex Grant finishing 64th and 101st respectively...the Washington State women raced to a 14th place finish led by the 12th place finish of former standout Anna Blue...Ana Cabrera finished 47th with Kayle Peterson and Molly Bull finishing 91st and 93rd respectively...also competing for the Cougars, Natalie Smith finished 149th.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING: The top two teams at each regional event will qualify for the NCAA Championships November 24, at Terre Haute, Ind...the top four individual runners from non-qualifying teams also advance to the championships....13 additional teams will be selected for at large bids to form the 31-team field that will compete in the NCAA Championships.
NEXT COMPETITION: The NCAA Championships will be held at Terre Haute, Ind., Monday, Nov. 22.
