Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jason Fontenot came off the bench to contribute 15 points, six assists and three rebounds to spark Oregon State past Western Oregon 67-51 in exhibition men's basketball Monday night at Gill Coliseum. Kyle Jeffers added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Beavers, who begin the regular season Nov. 17 against Siena in the BCA Invitational in Raleigh, N.C.

Kevin Tyner had 16 points to lead Western Oregon, a Division II school located 20 miles up U.S. Highway 99W from OSU. Evan Kieling added 15 points and Garrett Johnson 12 for the Wolves.

'We've got a lot of work to do in getting used to playing without a couple of returning players and we'll continue to get better,' said OSU head coach Jay John, whose team is currently without David Lucas and Angelo Tsagarakis due to injuries and missing Jim Hanchett as he completes football season. 'I thought we made some adjustments with some personnel and guys did a good job the last 12-13 minutes or so.'

Oregon State used a 24-3 run over eight minutes of the second half to take the win.

The Beavers led 35-23 at halftime, only to see WOU jump into a 37-36 lead when Tyner hit a fastbreak layin with 14:10 left in the game. The Wolves still led 42-41 after Kurt Webb hit a three-pointer with 12:17 left.

The Beavers scored the next 12 points, though, with Fontenet and Marcel Jones scoring five each during that burst. Oregon State eventually extended its lead to 65-45 with 4:13 remaining on a layup by J.S. Nash.

Fontenet - a 5-foot-10 junior guard who redshirted last season - finished the night 4-for-6 from the field (including 3-for-4 on three-pointers) and 4-for-4 from the free throw line in 16 minutes of playing time.

'Jason did a good job,' John said. 'We as a team - where we are now and where we're going to be - are two different places, and I don't know how long that will be. But I'm hoping that with depth on the team and some people who have some ability, that we'll find somebody every game to provide a spark. Jason certainly did that tonight.'

Jones added nine points and six rebounds for OSU, while Lamar Hurdhad seven points and five rebounds.

The larger Beavers had a 40-25 rebounding advantage but turned the ball over 16 times while forcing 11 by the Wolves. OSU shot 47.8 percent from the field (22-for-46), including 5-for-15 on three-pointers, and outscored Western Oregon 18-5 at the free throw line while limiting the Wolves to 37.5 percent (21-for-56) shooting from the field.

Despite the proximity of the two schools, it is believed to be the first time they have met in men's basketball since the 1936-37 season, when the Beavers took a 44-24 victory in Oregon State's old Men's Gymnasium (now Langton Hall).
