FIVE TEAMS INVITED TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Pac-10 Co-Champion Wildcats Earn No. 13 Seed

Five Pac-10 teams have been invited to the 64-team NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, which opens Thursday and Friday with first-round action at 16 different campus sites... The ARIZONA Wildcats (15-5-0 overall, 6-3-0 Pac-10) and defending champion UCLA Bruins are the 2004 Pac-10 Co-Champions after finishng in a tie with 18 total points... The Wildcats earned the league's automatic NCAA bid by virtue of the head-to-head tie-breaker and are making the program's first-ever NCAA Championship appearance... Second-year head coach Dan Tobias has guided UA from worst to first, posting a school-record six Pac-10 wins this year after tying for last place in the Conference (9th, 2-6-1) in 2003... Arizona received the No. 13 seed while UCLA is the No. 14 seed... WASHINGTON (14-4-1, 5-3-1) is seeded 15th and CALIFORNIA (11-5-3, 4-3-2) is the league's other invitee... The top 16 teams are seeded and Conference teams cannot play each other in the first round, however, second round Conference matchups are permissable... Only two seeds will be traveling and both hail from the Pac-10 -- the Wildcats and Huskies... The ACC leads all conferences with eight teams in the tournament, while five teams will represent the Pac-10, Big 12 and Big Ten.

Last year, five Pac-10 teams received invitations to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, while six Pac-10 teams comprised the Tournament field in 2002... Five Conference teams competed in the 2001 Tournament, while a league-record seven teams were among the field of 64 in 2000.

PAC-10 WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTES

ARIZONA: The No. 13 seed Wildcats (15-5-0 overall) will play Colgate in Storrs, Conn., on Friday in UA's first NCAA Tournament game ever... The winner will face the winner of the Harvard-Connecticut matchup... The Pac-10 Co-Champion, Arizona tied with UCLA at 6-3-0 in league play and earned the Conference's automatic bid by virtue of the first tie-breaker (head-to-head competition)... Arizona set a school record for wins this year, improving on last year's 6-11-2 overall record... UA tied for ninth-place in the Pac-10 in 2003, finishing 2-6-1 in league play.

CALIFORNIA: The Golden Bears (11-5-3 overall) will face No. 16 seed Santa Clara Friday in the opening round of NCAA Tournament play at Santa Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium... The winner faces the winner of the Stanford-Cal Poly match... Cal tied for fourth place in the Pac-10 at 4-3-2 and returns to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year absence... The Bears are making their 12th NCAA appearance and post a combined 4-3-2 record against teams selected to this year's College Cup... Cal and SCU met in a regular-season game on Oct. 6, and the Broncos notched a 3-1 victory.

STANFORD: The Cardinal earned its seventh consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, advancing on an at-large bid to play Cal Poly at Santa Clara University... Stanford (12-5-3), which tied for fourth place in the Pac-10 at 4-3-2 this season, won the 2002 Pac-10 title and advanced as far as the NCAA quarterfinals that season... SR F Marcie Ward paces the team with eight goals and 18 points... SR Nicole Barnhart leads the Pac-10 in goals against average (0.44) and ranks second in shutouts with nine on the season... The Cardinal lead the league with 12 shutouts this year.

UCLA: The Bruins earned the No. 14 seed as an at-large selection in the NCAA Championship and make their eighth consecutive postseason appearance, hosting a four-team regional... UCLA will face Pepperdine in first-round action on Friday... The winner faces the winner of the San Diego-UNLV match... The 2004 Pac-10 Co-Champions along with Arizona, UCLA (13-6-0 overall, 6-3-0 Pac-10) defeated both Pepperdine and San Diego in the regular season... The Bruins downed the Toreros 4-0 on Aug. 27 and knocked off the Waves 1-0 on Sept. 24... UCLA has made nine total NCAA Championship appearances... SO F Bristyn Davis leads the Pac-10 in shots (71) and shots per game (3.74), ranks second in points (29) and is tied for second in goals (12).

WASHINGTON: The Huskies swept California and Stanford in the final weekend of regular season play and earned an at-large bid as the No. 15 seed... Washington (14-4-1) travels to Auburn, Ala., to take on Birmingham-Southern in opening round action... The winner faces the Auburn-Clemson winner... This is the second straight postseason invitation for UW, which has received all eight of its all-time NCAA tournament bids during head coach Lesle Gallimore's 11 seasons... Washington finished third in the Pac-10 at 5-3-1... Birmingham-Southern won its last 10 games en route to the Big South Conference championship... The Huskies and Panthers have never met in women's soccer... UW has a 4-6-1 all-time record in NCAA Tournament play, reaching the Round of 16 in 2000... Washington has played 12 games in the regular season against teams comprising the NCAA Tournament field, posting a 9-3 record... SR F Tina Frimpong, the 2003 Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year, is tied for the Conference lead in game-winning goals with six this season.
