Cardinal Makes Final Preparations for 2004-05 Season
Nov. 10, 2004
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford will kick off the 2004-05 season this week, as the Cardinal open with a pair of exhibition games at Santa Clara's Leavey Center on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon. Stanford, ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN/WBCA coaches' polls, will debut tomorrow night against Baden Sports at 7 p.m. before hosting Love & Basketball on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Last year, Stanford finished the season with a 27-7 record, a top-ten ranking, an Elite Eight appearance, its third-straight Pac-10 title and second-straight Pac-10 Tournament Title. Earlier this fall, the Cardinal was picked by the coaches and the media to defend its conference title and senior Kelley Suminski was named to the Preseason Watch List for the Wooden and Naismith Awards. Suminski was also named to the preseason All-Pac-10 team.
The Cardinal will be under the guidance of head coach Tara VanDerveer for the 19th season this year. She has amassed an overall record of 602-168 (.782) in 25 years as a head coach, while her record at Stanford stands at 450-117 (.794) in 18 years. The NCAA Tournament proved sweet, as she recorded her 600th career win when the Cardinal defeated Missouri, 68-44, in the First Round. She then won her 450th game as Stanford's head coach against Vanderbilt (57-55) in the Sweet 16.
Stanford will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 19 when the Cardinal travels to Utah for a 6 p.m. match-up against the Utes.
