Deason Claims Thunderbird Invitational Crown

Nov. 11, 2004

Stanford, Calif. - The Cardinal freshmen faced off yesterday in the singles final of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational at the Taube Tennis Center, and Whitney Deason, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, posted a three-set victory over teammate Lejla Hodzic on Wednesday afternoon. Rain cut the tournament short last weekend, but it was an all-Stanford final, so the duo returned to Northern California to play for the title.

With the 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory yesterday, Deason now owns a 9-1 record in singles play this season, while Hodzic owns a 5-2 record in singles play. Deason advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Northwest Regional at Stanford in October before claiming the Thunderbird Invitational title yesterday.

The two are also proving to be a formidable doubles pair, with a 7-2 record. The duo lost in the finals of the ITA Northwest Regional (to teammates Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette) an posted three wins at the Thunderbird Invitational before rain halted the tournament.
