Nov. 11, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State junior outside hitter Sarah Watkins has been named a first-team selection to the 2004 Academic All-District VIII University Division Volleyball Team.
Watkins (Mishawaka, Ind.) was a second-team selection last season and also garnered first-team All-Pac-10 academic honors. The junior outside hitter has a perfect 4.0 GPA as an Education major with an emphasis on Spanish. As one of seven (six from the Pac-10) first-team selection, Watkins advances to the national ballet where she is up for the Academic All-American team.
'This is a great and well-deserved honor for Sarah,' said ASU head coach Brad Saindon. 'She is a model student-athlete for our team and for our University. A lot of our younger girls look up to her for guidance both on the court and off.'
On the court, Watkins leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-10 averaging 0.38 service aces per game. The co-captain also ranks second for the Sun Devils with 2.89 kills per game and second with 254.0 points (3.48 per game average). She has recorded 11 matches with 10 or more kills this season, including a career-high 24 on a .372 hitting percentage against Washington State (10/16). Watkins also has four double-doubles this season.
The Sun Devils (9-13, 4-9 Pac-10) have five matches remaining in the 2004 season, including a nationally tape-delayed broadcast of tonight's 7 p.m. match against Washington State.
