Q & A with Dana Stirn

The Washington women's soccer team begins NCAA Tournament play Friday, Nov. 12. The Huskies have a first-round matchup with Big South Conference champion Birmingham-Southern in Auburn, Alabama. The winner will play the winner of Friday's Auburn-Clemson game. That second-round contest is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 14 at noon Pacific Time.

Gohuskies.com: What are your thoughts going into Friday'a NCAA Tournament game?

DS: 'It's exciting. I'm a freshman, so it's my first time of course. I'm playing with a lot of senior starters except for Dani Bridges, and I know how to play with her because she was on my club team. It's just exciting being a freshman on a team that is in the tournament.'

Gohuskies.com: Have the veterans players talked to you about what to expect in the tournament?

DS: 'They haven't said anything. We're treating this as another game.'

Gohuskies.com: What do you know about your first-round opponent Birmingham-Southeran?

DS: They play a different lineup, that's the biggest thing. They play a 5-4-1, with only one forward, so it's a little bit different to defend. I've never played against a lineup like this and we haven't seen any of their games on tape. But, it will be fine.'

Gohuskies.com: What was your reaction Monday during the NCAA Tournament selection show when you found out you were going to be playing in Alabama for the first round?

DS: 'Everyone was a lot more excited than I think the freshmen were. It was our first time and we didn't know it was this big of a deal. Of course we already knew we were getting in so we were just waiting for the draw. We were excited not be to sent to Portland.'

Gohuskies.com: Do the defensive players feel more confident going into the tournament after shutting out two good teams last weekend?

DS: 'Yeah. That was our goal, to not let them score. It's been frustrating the last few games getting scored on a lot, to have two shutouts. That was nice.'
