Cougars Defeat Baden Sports 75-54 In Final Exhibition Game
Nov. 13, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. - Kate Benz led four Washington State University women's basketball players who scored in double figures with 17 points as the Cougars defeated Baden Sports 75-54 in exhibition action Saturday at Friel Court.
Benz, who battled the flu in the days leading up to the game, added 10 rebounds to record her second double-double in as many exhibition games. The sophomore from Portland Ore. shot 7-of-10 from the field to post the game high point total.
'The kid had 17 points and 10 rebounds and she had a 102-degree temperature two days ago,' WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said of Benz. 'It was amazing but that is the type of kid she is. Also, (Dani) Montgomery has been sick all week so I thought both of their efforts definitely didn't display like they were sick.'
The backcourt scoring punch was provided by Charmaine Jones and Adriane Ferguson. Jones chipped in 12 points including going a perfect 8-of-8 from the line and Ferguson added 11 points to go with her seven rebounds. Starting forward Emma Joneby added 10 points and seven rebounds.
WSU out-rebounded Baden Sports 49-33, including a 20-9 advantage on the offensive end. In two exhibition wins the Cougars out-rebounded their opponents by a 103-69 margin.
WSU shot 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) from the line compared to 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) for Baden Sports. In addition, the Cougars turned the ball over 11 times, 10 fewer than in their exhibition win against Team Concept, Nov. 6.
'We took care of the ball much better than we did the last game,' Murrell said.
With the game tied at 29 with 1:46 remaining in the first half the Cougars took a lead it would not relinquish with a 10-0 run to take a 39-29 lead at halftime. The run was aided by three Baden turnovers and six free throws by Jones.
The Cougars open the regular season Friday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. against Boise State at Friel Court.
