Bruins Fall Twice at Match Play Championships

Nov. 15, 2004

The fifth-seeded UCLA women's golf team lost twice in the Collegiate Match Play Championships hosted by the men's and women's collegiate golf associations at the Mission Inn Resort at Howie-in-the-Hills, FL.

The Bruins fell 4-1 to conference rival Arizona in the first round and lost 3.5-1.5 to Purdue in the second round.

UCLA's two top players, senior All-American Charlotte Mayorkas and freshman scoring leader Amie Cochran did not make the trip.

Junior All-American Susie Mathews was the only UCLA player to win her match in the first round. She defeated Arizona's Miriam Kraschinski, 6 and 5.

In the second round, the Bruins picked up one point from redshirt freshman Brianna Loyear, who defeated Maria Stinson 1-up with a birdie on the final hole. Freshman Vanessa Brockett also picked up a half point by tying Purdue's Whitney Frykman. Brockett's birdie at the 17th squared the match and she matched pars with her opponent on the final hole to earn the tie.
