USC swimming star Kaitlin Sandeno was one of two Americans named October Athletes of the Month by the United States Olympic Committee. Fellow Olympian Brendan Hansen was the other.
Sandeno won four gold medals at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 7-11, capturing three of the four gold medals on the first day of competition. Sandeno swam a total of six races on Oct. 7, winning her first gold of the evening in the 200m fly. She then came back 45 minutes later to claim first place in the 400m IM in American-record time, a full three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
She capped off the night by anchoring Team USA's 4x200m freestyle relay, which set the U.S. Open record for the fastest time on U.S. soil. Two days later, she earned her fourth gold of the meet in the 400m free, outdistancing the field by three seconds.
