Senior Jon Rankin Advances to NCAA Cross Country Championships

Nov. 15, 2004

Senior Jon Rankin received an at-large individual bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Sunday after an impressive showing at the West Regionals on Saturday. Rankin will head to Terre Haute, IN and the campus of Indiana State on Monday, Nov. 22 to compete in the National Championships.

Rankin earned All-West Region honors after a fifth-place finish at the West Regional Championships on Saturday (30:30). The senior led the men's team to its highest finish in eight years, a fourth-place finish.

On Saturday, Head Coach Eric Peterson had this to say about the senior -'Jon Rankin once again proved to be as tough as any runner in the Western region. Through four miles today, he had a 40-meter lead on the entire field. At that point, the top five runners passed him, but he did a good job of staying with the lead pack and securing an automatic bid to the NCAA --his first appearance in the NCAA Championships.

Rankin will join the women's team in Indiana after they received an at-large team bid after a sixth-place finish at the West Regional.
