Nov. 18, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Catie Schuetzle, a long and triple jumper from Spokane, Wash., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Washington State University and compete for the Cougar Track & Field team, Head Coach Rick Sloan announced Thursday.
'We are thrilled that Catie has committed to Washington State before her senior season begins,' Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan said. 'She was state champion in the long jump last year and has been at our track and field summer camp the last three years. We've watched her grow as an athlete and as a person. We really feel she has the potential to be an outstanding jumper for the Cougars in the years to come.'
Schuetzle (pronounced shoots-lee) has earned 10 varsity letters at Shadle Park High in track, volleyball and basketball. She was the Washington state 4A champion in the long jump last spring with a leap of 18-feet, 8 1/4 inches. She finished third in the triple jump at the same state meet with a distance of 37-1 1/2, and seventh in the 100m dash with a time of 12.89 seconds. Sarah Burns, currently a freshman on the Cougar track team, finished second to Schuetzle in the long jump and won the triple jump last year competing for Curtis High of Tacoma.
Schuetzle was selected All-Greater Spokane League second team twice in track and first team in volleyball this fall. She has twice been the track team's MVP in addition to its captain. As a member of the Performance Track and Field Club, Schuetzle finished seventh in the long jump and 11th in the triple jump at the 2001 Junior National Meet. She set three school records in track so far in her Shadle Park career.
In addition to athletics, Schuetzle has been her class president, ASB treasurer and involved with community service throughout her prep career. She plans to major in criminal justice or education at WSU.
