Donahue Sets Freshman Digs Record In Three-Game Loss To Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona junior All-American outside hitter Kim Glass recorded 20 kills and 11 digs to lead the No. 22 Wildcats to a three-game sweep (30-16, 30-25, 30-27) over the rival Arizona State Sun Devils in front of 1,778 fans Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Wildcats snapped a two-match losing streak on ASU's home court, improving to 17-9 overall and 9-7 in Pac-10 play. Arizona State fell to 10-15 overall and 5-11 in league play.
ASU libero Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded 13 digs to set the ASU single-season record with 361. She bettered the previous record of 355 set by current assistant coach Jami Coughlin in 1998. Donahue has now recorded double-digits in digs in 18 matches this season and is averaging 4.51 dpg.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Watkins (Mishawaka, Ind.) led the Sun Devils with 16 kills on a .297 hitting percentage. In addition to Donahue's match-high 13 digs, senior defensive specialist recorded 12 digs in her final match against the rival Wildcats. Freshman setter Rachel Mittelstaedt (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded 39 assists and led the Devils with four blocks.
Glass, a two-time All-Pac-10 selection, paced the Wildcat offense with 20 kills on a torrid .390 hitting percentage. With a team-high 11 digs she recorded her ninth double-double of the season. Setter Stephanie Butkus led all players with 48 assists and Cassidy Crum added 10 digs.
Next up, Arizona State hosts No. 9 Stanford (Nov. 26, 7 p.m.) and No. 14 California (Nov. 27, 7 p.m.) next weekend to conclude the 2004 season.
Game Notes: Sydney Donahue is also on pace to break the freshman record for digs per game in a season with 4.51 dpg... the current record is 3.62 set by Jami Coughlin in 1998... freshman middle blocker Colette Meek is on pace to break the freshman record for blocks per game with 1.25... the current record is 1.09 set by Laura Hibsman in 1996... the crowd of 1,778 was ASU's second over 1,000 this season (Oct. 1, 1,115 vs. USC) and the 30th dating back to 1991... the crowd is also the ninth largest in recorded history.
